pink diamonds

Pinks are the only diamonds we carry with treated colour. We say so first, because it is the most important thing to know about them.

The colour of natural diamonds is enhanced by HPHT — treatment with high pressure and temperature. The treatment is permanent: the colour stays with the stone for good.

nature

colour without an impurity

Nitrogen gives a yellow diamond its colour, boron a blue one. A pink has no such impurity: its colour appears when the crystal, deep underground, is squeezed under pressure and its lattice shifts slightly. That is why pink often lies in the stone in bands — traces of that shift. Why some crystals turn pink from it and others brown, no one fully knows.

treatment

colour with a human hand

A treated stone is mined from the earth like any natural diamond, but it received its noble pink colour with the help of people. Very few stones come out with a beautiful colour: after treatment they often turn dark burgundy, orange or pale. Truly noble pinks among them are rare, and their shades vary — from cool, almost lilac, to warm with a hint of peach.

GIA

written on the stone itself

A GIA report states the treatment plainly: the origin of colour reads Treated. And the girdle of each of our pinks is laser-inscribed TREATED COLOR next to the report number — the truth about the colour stays on the stone itself, whoever it ends up with.

the scale

how to read the colour

GIA describes pink by two measures: hue and saturation. Hue — pink, purplish pink, orangy pink; saturation — from Faint to Fancy Vivid, and Fancy Deep and Fancy Dark for darker stones. The brighter and purer the pink, the rarer the stone.

pink is chosen with the eyes

Shade, cut, play of light, size, the way the stone looks on the hand — that is what the choice is made of. The report tells you where the colour comes from; whether the stone is yours is for your eyes to decide. A pink can only be bought in person. We hunt for them all over the world and view them at the producers' offices — and we look forward to showing you the collection in our showroom.
